How to Waterproof Leather Boots

Why is Waterproofing Leather So Important?

It's Friday night. You finally got that new pair of leather boots you have been drooling over for months, and you can't wait to show them off to your friends. Suddenly as you’re walking to meet them, though, your worst fear is realized… it's starting to rain... a lot!

Water can cause significant damage to leather if left untreated. Oddly enough, one of the worst effects water has on leather is its ability to dry the leather out. But how can getting something wet cause it to dry out? Oils in the leather keep it feeling soft and supple. However, water can penetrate the surface of the leather and "float" the oil to the top. This process causes the leather to dry out out and will eventually lead to cracking on the surface. Other damage can include staining, stretching, and discoloration of the leather, although this can be avoided by protecting your leather in advance.

Waterproofing Leather Boots

It is imperative that leather be protected prior to it being worn in wet environments in order to ensure that the water cannot penetrate the porous leather surface. Check out the Clarks Shoe Care and Maintenance Guide video above to give you the tools, tips, and tricks on how to waterproof your pair of leather boots and keep them looking great for years to come.
